Every call out here depends on which side of the hogback the vehicle died on. Downtown, it's tight streets full of School of Mines permit parking and a flatbed that has to thread past parked cars. Up US 6 in Clear Creek Canyon it's a different job entirely — two narrow lanes, a rock wall on one shoulder and the creek on the other, so we're often winching along the road instead of across it. Rockfall debris doesn't help.
The I-70 / CO-58 junction is its own weather system. Ski weekends plus the Floyd Hill construction stack traffic for miles, and drivers coming down off the grade cook their brakes and end up on the shoulder smelling like burnt pads. Lookout Mountain Road gives us the motorcycle and low-clearance sports car calls. Ford Street and CO-58 carry brewery trucks and tankers, which is a heavier class of recovery.
Canyon and mountain-grade recoveries around Golden
Can you reach me in Clear Creek Canyon on US 6?
Yes. Get as far off the pavement as the shoulder allows, stay uphill of your car, and tell dispatch the nearest tunnel or mile marker. Canyon calls are usually Jefferson County Sheriff or CSP, and traffic control there can slow things down.
My brakes faded coming down I-70 toward Golden. Now what?
Don't keep driving on them. Once brakes overheat on that descent they may feel fine and fail again on the next grade. We'll flatbed it to your shop rather than tow it downhill on questionable brakes.
