When roadside becomes a tow

Usually the alternator rather than the battery. A battery that takes a jump and holds is flat; a car that dies again once the cables come off is not charging, and it will strand you again shortly. At that point a tow to a shop is the answer rather than a second jump.
Can you change a tire if I don't have a spare?
Not at the roadside — there has to be something to put on. Without a usable spare it becomes a tow to somewhere the tire can be replaced, which is worth knowing before you wait, since a lot of newer vehicles carry a sealant kit rather than a spare.
