Stalled in High Water on Arapahoe Road? Don't Restart It
Twelve inches of moving water floats most cars, and one turn of the key on a flooded engine can turn a $250 tow into a $6,000 rebuild.
Leave the key alone. If the engine quit while you were driving through standing water, there's a good chance water is sitting on top of a piston, and water doesn't compress. Crank it and you bend a connecting rod. That's a tow bill turning into an engine bill.
Everything else here is what to do in the hour after.
How deep is too deep?
The depth that hurts the car is lower than the depth that hurts you. On most sedans the air intake sits somewhere around the top of the front tire; crossovers a little higher, a lifted pickup higher still. Water only has to touch that opening for a fraction of a second, and a bow wave off an oncoming vehicle in the other lane will do it even if the water you're sitting in looks harmless.
For you: six inches of moving water takes an adult off their feet. Twelve inches floats most cars. Eighteen to twenty-four moves nearly everything, including a loaded truck, and more than half of the people who drown in floods in this country do it inside a vehicle rather than outside one.
Why these streets flood in ten minutes
Monsoon moisture pushes into Colorado from mid-July through August, and the moisture in the air over Denver peaks right around the first of August. What that produces isn't a long rain. It's a storm that stalls over four or five square miles and drops one to three inches in under an hour while a neighborhood two miles away stays dry.
Centennial gives that water nowhere to go. Roughly thirty square miles of roof, driveway and parking lot at about 5,700 feet, tilted toward the Dry Creek and Little Dry Creek drainages on the west side of I-25 and toward Cherry Creek on the east. The Mile High Flood District runs the metro rain and stream gauge network, and its flash flood prediction program runs April through September for exactly this reason. There's a USGS stream gauge on Little Dry Creek right by Arapahoe Road if you want to watch a channel come up in real time.
One local quirk worth knowing: drainage here isn't the city's. Stormwater is SEMSWA, the Southeast Metro Stormwater Authority, formed in 2006 by an agreement between the city, Arapahoe County and the local water districts. If the inlet at the end of your street backs up every August, reporting it to the city sends it to the wrong desk.
The hail problem underneath the flood problem
The storms that flood us usually hail first. Enough hail to pack a curb inlet solid, and then the rain behind it has nowhere to drain. South metro crews have gone out with loaders to dig drains out of hail slush after these things. So a street can flood on three-quarters of an inch of rain that would normally clear in minutes. Don't judge the water by how hard it rained.
The spots that get people
Underpasses, mostly. The dips where Arapahoe Road and Dry Creek Road drop under I-25 hold water well after the rain quits, and from a hundred feet back a flooded underpass reads as a puddle because you can't see the bottom of the dip. Same story at the low crossings where the creeks pass under the arterials, and in the big flat retail aprons off Arapahoe where every inlet sits at the far end of the lot.
The rule I'd give anybody: if you can't see the lane markings through the water, you don't know how deep it is or whether the pavement is still under there. Turn around. The detour costs four minutes.
First ten minutes if you're already in it
- Hazards on, and don't restart. Not once, not just to see. One crank is enough to do it.
- If the water is rising, leave the car. Doors get very hard to push open against a foot of water, so go out a window if you have to. Power windows work for a while after a soaking, but not indefinitely.
- Move uphill, not downstream, and call from dry ground.
- Photograph the water line before it drains. The mud line on the door, on the door sill, on the seat fabric. Tomorrow that line is gone, and it's the only evidence of how high it got.
- Say the words "it went through water" when you call. That single sentence changes what we send and how we load it.
Why a flooded car gets handled differently
It goes on a flatbed, in neutral, winched up. We don't crank it to load it, and we don't put a booster pack on it. If the water was over the sills, the body modules and the wiring have been sitting in it, and energizing that harness is how a repairable car becomes a total loss. Tell dispatch how deep it got and whether the carpet is wet. That's the whole triage.
Insurance, and the number that decides it
Flood damage falls under comprehensive, not collision, the same bucket as hail and deer. Deductibles run $500 to $1,000 for most people around here, and if you carry liability only, this is out of pocket.
Hydrolock repair typically runs $3,000 to $8,000, and it can be the whole engine if more than one cylinder took water. Carriers start evaluating for total loss once repairs pass roughly 70 to 80 percent of the car's actual cash value, and a ten-year-old commuter with a flooded engine clears that bar without much trouble. Don't let a shop start a teardown before the adjuster has looked at it. Most want to inspect before disassembly and will argue about paying for one they never saw.
When you shouldn't call anyone
If you rolled through six inches, the engine never stumbled, and the car still runs, drive home. Check the oil that evening. A dipstick that looks like coffee with cream means water reached the crankcase and the car needs a shop rather than a highway. If it comes out clean and dark, you got away with it, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a tow.
The part that shows up later: a wet interior isn't a solved problem once it dries. Control modules live under the front seats on a lot of vehicles, and carpet padding holds water for weeks. Odd electrical faults in September usually trace back to an August storm nobody connected them to.
